Reiki Explained
The Reiki process begins by placing the palms of the hands in different body areas; warm and soothing energy flows from the hands of the practitioner into the client, promoting relaxation. You may be asked to turn to your stomach to apply Reiki on your backside—direct contact is not required to administer Reiki; the client will choose "touch" or "no touch" at the beginning of the session.
Origins of Reiki
Reiki comes from two root Japanese words: Rei means "universal," and Ki means "life force.
Although the roots of Reiki healing are unclear, several healing systems like Reiki were previously established and practiced in Japan before the development of Usui Reiki Ryoho.
Mikao Usui, venerably known as Usui Sensei, in his urgent search to attain An-shin Ritsu-mei, went to mountain Kurama, north of Kyoto. An-shin Ritsu-mei is a state of enlightenment in which one achieves effortless peace, and with such peace, one acquires an understanding of the purpose of life. Prepared with the intention to surrender his life to attain this state of mind as advised by his Zen teacher, Usui Sensei was to fast and meditate to the point of perishing in the sacred mountain. As days passed, he grew feeble from fasting. By the 21st day, a bright and powerful ray of light penetrated his mind through the top of his head, filling him with strength, vitality, high-frequency spiritual energy, and a new level of awareness.
Overjoyed that he had received the gift of energy and consciousness of the Universe, the enlightened state of mind he deeply yearned for, he ran down the mountain with eagerness to tell his Zen teacher. On the way down he fell and injured his toe, as he placed his hands over it, Reiki energy began flowing through his hands, taking away the pain and healing his toe. He realized that not only had he achieved enlightenment, he also received the gift of healing. At that moment, he knew his life purpose was to help heal and teach others how to do so.
In April 1922, he established Shin-shin Kai-Zen Usui Reiki Ryo-Ho Gakkai (Mind-Body Improvement Usui Reiki Therapy Society). He opened a center in Harajuku, Aoyama, Tokyo, where he gave treatments and taught Reiki.
In the fall of 1923, Usui Sensei devoted his time to treating the casualties of the Great Kanto earthquake of September 1 of that year. After becoming successful in treating survivors, he became popular, and his reputation grew all over Japan.
After the earthquake, he developed Reiki techniques such as Gassho meditation, Byosen scanning, Reiji-ho, and Gyoshi ho, different methods for attunements, and the 3 Usui Reiki symbols.
Because of his reputation, he outgrew his clinic and built a larger clinic in Nakano, Tokyo, in 1925. He spent most of his time training students in Reiki and giving treatments; the Japanese government honored Usui Sensei for his noble work of helping others.
On March 9, 1926, Usui Sensei, who was 62, died of a stroke while traveling to Fukuyama. Dr. Mikao Usui taught Usui Reiki Ryoho to more than 2,000 students, 20 of whom were initiated into teachers.
